Is Green the "New Black"?

Energy savings and being green is still a hot topic and I believe it is here to stay. So, what can you do to your older machines to help go green? For starters, if you have a real old machine with a T12 lamp, you should start by at least replacing it with a T8 (don't forget to change your starter too).

The next step will save your customer more money and probably will save you money, as well. If you were thinking LED's, you are right. LED's use less energy with an increase in life span and a much better visualization of your product. I have seen studies that show LED lighting can drop energy use from ~1.01KWh/day with a T8 to .62KWh/day with LED's. And while I can't say these figures will be the same in your machine, I do know you will have better lighting, less failure with your bulbs and you will save some money by going greener.

Yes the initial investment will be more for LED's, but over the long run it should save you and the location money. LED lighting kits can run upwards of $165.00 for a full kit or as low as $70.00 for a triple row LED lamp that fits right into your existing fluorescent socket. We have both styles available for most makes and models if you are interested in joining the green revolution.

Notes about the One Show

The NAMA One Show in Chicago last week, while seemingly smaller than years past, was full of new and exciting equipment. The trend this year, of course, is touchscreen interfaces. This not only brings flash to the equipment, but allow us to post complete nutritional information and advertising on our machines. The other major change is a redesign to the doors to allow for the new ADA laws (maximum height is now 48" from 54" and minimum is 15" up from 9").

USI was showing their new design with the 7" touchscreen, lowered door controls and an elevator to bring your product up to the 15" minimum. They have also added an optional elevator to the Alpine series glass front food machine for handling of fragile items. AMS had their new Energystar rated compressor. Vendo was showing a smaller, 6 select - 521 beverage stack vendor and a 5 gallon water bottle dispenser. Royal had their new glass door cooler, while Coinco was showing the new product now available from them, due to their acquisition of InOne.

Energy savings was also a big feature being shown. It looks like everyone will be making the change over to LEDs in all the new machines. And for those of you with older machines, we have LED lamps now available that are a direct swap in for your current fluorescent lights. If you are looking for a more robust package, we also have available full side wrap kits for most snack machines.

We also hope to make available to you in the near future an energy saving control module for your beverage machines. This unit will learn the patterns of use of your beverage machine and raise the internal temperature of the cabinet for the periods that it learns as an inactive time frame.

While it is exciting to see all the new advancements in equipment, it is always great to be back home.

We interface directly with Coinco on every repair and download and install the latest software updates that are available. We have taken what we have learned repairing Coinco equipment and have applied this knowledge to the other manufacturers that we repair such as Conlux, Mars, Maka, etc. We repair these units right here in our Wilmington, MA office, which allows us a quick turnaround time to get you up and running as soon as possible.

As many of you have noticed, we have recently lowered our repair rates as well. By streamlining our operation and upgrades to our software and computer system, we have become more efficient and we have passed those savings on to you. You will still get the same 120 day warranty and service that you have come to expect, only at a reduced cost.

Soda Pricing

As I talk to customers, one of the concerns that I hear is about raising prices. For vending operators, it seems that this is a lot harder than it should be. As I thought about the pricing that operators are forced to charge and what other businesses can charge, it got me thinking. In the vending industry, all pricing in a machine includes any taxes, bottle deposits and commissions. Yet in a donut shop, sub shop or your local convenience store, that $1.69 - 20oz. bottle does not. So you get hit with a bottle deposit and meals tax, and now that $1.69 soda costs $1.80 or so. But, you don't see anyone complaining and walking away from the soda bottle. They pay the price, whatever it is. Meanwhile, the $1.25 that is charged in a vending machine for 20oz. is perceived to be too high by your customers in the location. So, what can you do? How about a decal on the front of your equipment that states in plain and simple English, "All Prices Include Applicable Taxes" or "All Prices Include Applicable Taxes and Bottle Deposit". You can get fancier if you want and try "Price Includes 5 Cent Bottle Deposit". If you pay a tax on your sales, you could do "Price Includes 5 Cent Bottle Deposit and 6.25% Meals Tax". It may not make a big difference, but let's make sure that the next time the customer complains over 5 cents they know exactly what it is that they are paying for.

Healthy Vending

is continuing to make the news and is being asked for more and more. Those of us that have been in the industry for a long time know that, traditionally, this type of product never sold well. For a really long time we never believed that bottled water would be a big seller either!!! It appears that this trend is gaining momentum and not going to leave. That being said, you do not need to buy into one of those "Healthy" product franchises to take advantage of this market. There are healthy machines readily available for the asking. AMS has the HealthyVend machine and USI has the Balance for Life.
These are the same machines that the franchise companies are selling, but with different graphics. The best part is since you are buying these outside a franchise you can vend whatever product you want. Get your feet wet with a 50% healthy and 50% traditional product mix. Trend the machine to the location without concern. Built in health controls and adjustable trays and spacing means vending whatever you want. If the "Healthy" thing just doesn't work for you, just peel off the graphics and you are good to go.

Should you buy new or used machines?

The question of buying new, used, or rebuilt machines is as old as this industry. It is really a decision that needs to be made a part of your business plan. A used machine will cost the least amount but will bring with it the inherent problems that used/old machines have. A rebuilt unit will be a step up as it should have been thoroughly checked out and major components rebuilt or replaced where needed. Add in a warranty and this is a viable alternative to a new machine. A new machine while being the most expensive will usually give you the most piece of mind. A long parts warranty, less apt to have any minor issues with the machine and putting your best foot forward in a new location goes a long way in this industry. Remember the life span of the equipment can be 20 yrs or so. If you amortize out the cost of new vs old and the actual expense you may be surprised at the end result. We have customers that designed their business both ways and are successful. It, again, is purely a business decision you need to make. There is no one right answer. If you are mechanically inclined and can do the repairs yourself, used may be the answer. If you are not mechanical, new may be best for you.

The true question is, as an operator, where can you best spend your time? Is it more profitable for you to be fixing machines or is it more profitable to be finding new locations? Either way clean, filled and working has always been the vendors credo.

Remember, anyone can buy a machine and put in in a location. You need to differentiate yourself from the rest. Great service, great product, great customer relations and never open the door to allow another company to offer better equipment then you.
